How to paint paneling and get professional results.

Remove all pictures, shelves, nails, screws, or anything else that protrudes or covers the paneling. Remove any furniture that does not fit in the middle of the room and give you ample room to paint.

Clean all walls and moldings with a good cleaner, degreaser. You must clean paneling to ensure best results.

I can't stand seeing the little black holes the grooves in the paneling have where the molding covers it at the ceiling, so I caulk. I also caulk the corners of the crown molding as well as the molding around doors and windows. It is well worth the time so you end up with a professional job.

When I caulk the top, I will run my finger both directions so the caulk is even in the groove. If I don't the caulk is uneven.

If you look close you will see a seem where each piece of paneling meets. This will be about every 4 foot since the paneling comes in 4x8 sheets. If this seem is not caulked the a black line will be seen when painted.

Paneling, moldings, and doors were primed and then two coats of a good quality paint was applied. White semi gloss on molding and doors, with two coats of satin on walls. I use kilz or Zinsser bulls-eye primer. Paint I like to use Sherwin Williams or Valspar from Lowe's.

The painted paneling looks great. This has brightened the room up and really updates it for just the cost of caulk, primer, and paint.
